After the al-Aqsa Mosque was set on fire on August 21, 1969, a wave of anger swept through the Arab and Muslim countries. The leaders of these countries gathered in Rabat on September 25, 1969 and agreed to establish the Organization of the Islamic Conference (which is now known as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation). The organization which was founded with 30 member states, established the al-Quds fund in 1976.
